What we have built for, what we know does not work yet, and how to tell us when we have got it wrong.

Where we are

We build this site to be operable without a mouse, without fine motor control, and without sight where the content allows it. We have not had it independently audited, so this page describes what we have done and tested rather than claiming a standard we have not verified.

We would rather tell you exactly where the gaps are than publish a conformance badge we cannot stand behind.

What we have done

Every page works from the keyboard alone, and the element with focus is always visibly marked.

Controls are at least 44 by 44 pixels on a phone, which is the size a thumb can actually hit.

Form fields have real labels, and when something is wrong the message appears next to the field in the page rather than as a pop-up that a screen reader announces somewhere else.

Multi-step forms move focus to the new question when you advance, so the page tells you where you are instead of leaving you at the bottom of a screen that has changed.

If your system asks for reduced motion, animations stop. Nothing here depends on movement to be understood.

Text contrast is checked against its own background on both the light and dark sections of the site.

What does not work yet, stated plainly

The 3D walkthrough itself is drawn on a canvas, the way a game is. A screen reader cannot describe the space inside it, and there is no non-visual equivalent of walking a room today. That is a real exclusion and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

Until there is, anything essential about a space should also exist outside the walkthrough — in the written description, the documentation, or a conversation. If a tour is the only place information lives, that information is unavailable to some people.

We have not tested with every screen reader and browser combination, and we have not run a formal audit. Some things will be broken that we do not know about.

Tell us

If something here does not work for you, tell us and we will fix it — you should not have to work around it. Email brenden@walkd.net and say what you were trying to do and what happened.

We will reply. If a fix is going to take a while, we will say so and tell you what it is, rather than going quiet.

Set it up for yourself

Below this you can stop animations, make the text larger, and underline links in body text. The settings are stored on your own device and apply only to this site.

They are preferences rather than fixes. They do not make this site meet a standard, and they do not close the gaps described above — the walkthrough is still a canvas a screen reader cannot describe. Your browser's own zoom, font size and reduced-motion settings work here too, and we honour those without you asking.

Set this page up for yourself

These are preferences, not fixes — they change how this site behaves for you and they are stored on your own device. They do not make the site conform to a standard, and the gaps above are still gaps.
